CORUNDUM ORIFICE MATERIAL
Although dtiCORE™ Diamond and tetraCORE™ Orifices are most ideal for waterjet cutting and cleaning applications, ruby and sapphire remain a commonly used orifice material. While ruby and sapphire, also known as corundum, are still heavily utilized today for non-critical applications, due to their inherent material characteristics they do not hold up well to impacts from on/off cycles, metal debris from high pressure lines, or abrasive particles that collide with the orifice edges. Any of these impacts can render the jewel useless in an instant. It takes only one impact on the inlet edge of a ruby or sapphire to chip it, causing jet stream quality failure. For these reasons, we almost always recommend upgrading to a higher quality diamond orifice material. Customers that make the switch typically never switch back due to significant increases in their productivity and bottomline.
